Voice Lessons
One thing that makes me a bit different than other voice teachers is that, as a “hybrid” singer, I have professional experience in many genres of music. I have been on the operatic/musical theatre stage, the jazz club, the recording booth for pop music, and many things in between. I love working with all of these styles and more. We use the basics of vocal technique and then branch out the styles of your choosing. Admittedly I love to use showtunes as they encompass so many musical styles and also ask us to stretch in a more athletic way that is conducive to technique learning. My students are often musical theatre performers, singer/songwriters, and classical singers, but I also have hobby singers, crooners, and even some rockers!
Singing should be an easy and joyful experience. It should feel good in your body and serve as an expression of your creativity. My vocal studio is a place to explore all of the sounds we make and how to use them. We experiment and get silly sometimes. We play! As a teacher I believe play is one of the most highly effective learning tools that is often overlooked in the pursuit of being a “serious” singer. We can learn a lot about technique and discover how our body wants to respond and integrate it. I work really well with actors, dancers, and other creative people. If you want a teacher who is strict and judgmental I am most likely not the teacher for you, and that is ok.
My goal is to create a space for my students where they are free to be whatever it is they are at their core and not fear judgment. We have students of so many musical styles, ages, gender expressions, personalities, and levels of experience. (Beginner to pro)
To the Beginning Singer:
You CAN sing! Singing can be daunting and scary. It means sharing a very personal part of you. It helps to have someone 'in your corner' giving you pointers on what is working for you and suggestions on how to make singing easier and more enjoyable. In my voice lessons we find the best parts of your voice and we build them up and expand on them. We don't judge or harshly criticize. Singing should be a joyful experience and a creative way to express yourself. I repeat, you CAN sing! Many students see a difference right from the first lesson. Here are some of the benefits that you may encounter from taking voice lessons:
-Better tone quality
-Increased projection
-Increased ability to hold notes (breath control)
-Expanded vocal range, (ability to hit higher and/or lower notes)
-Increased vocal stamina (can sing for longer and don't feel hoarse)
-Better overall appearance while singing (good posture, relaxed face, etc.)
-More confident and artistic presentation of songs
Weather you are just trying to belt out some karaoke with your friends or you want to start getting involved with local theatres or religious music groups, there are so many benefits to taking voice lessons. I am happy to speak with you about concerns and questions.
To the Intermediate/Advanced Singer:
You have chosen, as have I, to make singing a part of your life. You might have studied in the past or you have honed your own skills to the point where it is time to get some professional guidance. Either way, taking singing lessons will help you 'kick it up a notch' to say the least. We will take the skills and talents that you have acquired and expand upon them to really help you shine in your own individual way.
You can expect many, or all of these benefits:
-Increased breath capacity
-Increased vocal stamina
-More natural and consistent tone
-More focus in the middle voice and ease in the extremes including high notes and belt
-More freedom in the body
- Increased flexibility and agility
-More confident interpretations of songs
